What is the purpose of a restraining order?
A restraining order is a court order that tells a person what they can or cannot do. A restraining order may say, for example, that your spouse or partner cannot be within 200 feet of you at any time. There might be restrictions on speaking to you or appearing with your relatives.
The initial order is likely to be temporary. The order can be sought after calling the police for a case of abuse or after heading to the station and reporting that you've been harmed or fear for your life. You will need to fill out an application for relief from abuse to seek a restraining order. If the subsequent hearing finds that there was abuse or harm caused by the respondent, then it's possible to have the order made permanent for a length of time.
